In the previous article we discussed about the life of Swami Shiv Dayal Singh Ji (interlink First article here). Now it’s time to get into details of our second guruji who was Baba Jaimal Singh Ji. Babaji was the one who made the religious centre of the RadhaSoami Faith at Dera Beas, Amritsar where millions of devotees go to pay their tributes and listen the holy satsang delivered by current guruji.

Early Life Baba Jaimal Singh

Baba Jaimal singh is known as founder of Radhasoami Satsang Beas (RSSB). He is known as first satguru of Dera. Popularly known as Babaji Maharaj, He was born in the village of Lath Ghuman, Batala in Gurdaspur district of than East Punjab on July 1839. He was son of Jodh Singh who was a farmer and Daya Kaur who was a devotee of Sant NamDev. Influenced by his mother Babaji started visiting Ghuman shrine of Namdev at an early age of 4.

Education of Babaji Maharaj

Babaji Maharaj started his student life under the guidance of Baba Khem Singh Ji who was Vedantic saint at the age of 5 years. Within 2 years of his study, he became a very good reader of Guru Granth Sahib and he also read Dasam Granth.

When the babaji read the holy book of sikhs, he came to know that the Guru Nanak Dev Ji first guru of sikhs had rejected the concepts of hatha yoga, pranayama,  visits to pilgrimage, rituals and fasting as mean to reach the almighty God. So the guruji decided to find a master who is perfect in Anhad Shabad which meant inner sound. It was a type of meditation which involves the principle of inner sound. He was in search of a master who would teach meaning of five sounds “Panch Shabad” as mentioned in Guru Granth Sahib.”

Babaji’s Maharaj Life

Babaji served as a sepoy in British army and was promoted to position of havaldar during his stay in the army. After the retirement he took the path of spiritual teacher and settled in the isolated town of Beas. During the age of 15-17 years, he took the journey across North India to find master for five sound and his search ended in Agra where he found Shiv Dayal Singh Ji , founder of radha soami faith. Under him , he learned the concept of Panch Shabad and he became disciple of Soami Ji Maharaj.

After the initiation by Swami shiv dayal singh Ji, he was inclined towards becoming a saint, but his guruji told him to earn his own living and not beg like other saints. It was by the decision of Soami Ji Maharaj that he decided to join army as he was not interested in family trade of farming.

It was Swami ji who asked his spread the practice of nam and surat shabd yog in the year of 1877. In the year 1889 he took retirement from the service of Army and returned to his village. He settled in village Bal saran located on the banks of river Beas where he built a hut to live in. This small village has turned into township no and known as Dera baba Jaimal singh.
